Winter Concert – December TBD

PMEA Adjudication – TBD

Spring Concert – April TBD

Three years ago, we performed a world premiere of the piece “A Celtic Quest”. This piece was specifically written for the members of the 2018 Senior High Concert Band. They performed this premiere with the internationally known River City Brass Band!

Classroom rules are as follows:

  1. Follow directions when given
  2. Focused and ready to play during instructional time
  3. Use and handle your equipment only
  4. Gum, food, or drinks are not permitted in the band room
  5. Horseplay or rough-housing will not be tolerated

Students will be graded in three separate areas:  Audition/Playing tests, Concert attendance, and Participation.  Students may be graded by playing tests weekly.  This is to encourage individual practice.  Percussionists will be involved with this also.  Percussionists will need to plan time to practice for these tests in the band room.  Tests will be given at the discretion of the director.  Class participation points will be awarded based on discipline in class, behavior, effort, etc.  Bonus points may be awarded in this section.  There may be chair auditions.  Senior High Concert Band will also participate in the annual PMEA Music Performance Assessment in early march.

Students will also be graded on participation points.  Students will be awarded 100 participation points at the beginning of each grading period.  Students will lose participation points for poor management of materials, forgetting their instrument, leaving music out etc. Students are required to maintain the band facilities properly. The instrument room is expected to remain organized and cleaned. The band room and folder storage cabinets are also expected to remain in proper condition. Failure to accomplish these tasks may result in loss of points.

Reeds, valve oil, slide oil, mouthpiece pads, etc. are the students’ responsibility. Mr. Croach will maintain extra supplies for emergencies however students’ accounts will be charged if they need to utilize these supplies.

Students need to be on time.  Students who are not ready to play in the band room by 2:15 will be marked late.  Three lates to class = 1 hour of detention and a loss of 5 participation points.

Any student that wishes to apply for District Band must also audition for Honors Band in November. Additionally any students that auditions into Honors Band, may be presented the opportunity to perform in the orchestra pit for the school musical in March.

The Patriotic, Holiday, Spring, Adjudication, and Commencement are to be viewed in the same way as a major cumulative exam in any other academic course.  Students who miss a concert for an excused absence (death in the immediate family, severe illness on the part of the student, or once-in-a-lifetime experience) will be required to submit a report on a topic and a length of the director’s choosing.  Students who miss a concert for any other reason will also be required to submit a report.  However, their highest possible grade for that concert will be 65%.  The director will determine the validity of once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Participation at commencement is also required for students in grades 9-11.  Students will be graded for their participation at commencement as if it was a concert.  Students who miss commencement will receive a 75% for their final quarter (Q4) grade.  If a student anticipates an absence, they will need to complete a report, as described above, beforehand.  Your grade can and will be changed after commencement if you fail to attend.

Bonus points will be awarded in a variety of ways including but not limited to:

Private Lessons                                                + 5 points for each nine weeks that student takes lessons

Attend Concert Outside of School Function        + 2 points for each concert (must have program from concert)

Extra Effort in Class                                          + 1 or more points (Director’s Discretion)
